SHAKESPEARE & FILM

Shakespeare's characters and plots are accustomed to being on the stage and adapted for film. Hamlet is no stranger to being retold on film. The movie posters above reveal a varied selection of "directors and actors [who have] styles as diverse as Kenneth Branagh, Baz Luhrmann and Mel Gibson" who "strove to popularize Hamlet on the big screen" (PBS). The complexity of Hamlet's contrived madness and real anger at the betrayal of his Uncle Claudius brings untold calamity to those he loves most. Hamlet is believed to be one of Shakespeare's most complex characters and will continue to be brought to the stage and screen for decades to come.

Hamlet Act 3, Sc. 1
