The Audition

Who You
Are

"There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time. This expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it."

                                                                                    -Martha Graham
The audition monologue is one of the most unavoidable realities you will encounter if you choose to pursue acting. Whether you are performing for TV, film or theatre, there are a few rules to live by.

Finding the perfect piece is the most important step. You need to find a monologue that is true to your age, ethnicity and personality. For theater, stay away from movies and TV. If auditioning for film/TV, think obscure TV or film-characters that are not as well-known. You wouldn't want to be compared to the ideal or copycat great acting. Copycats can only hope for mediocre.

Most importantly, relax and be confident that who you are is unlike anyone else.
